The Jinan Huanggang Road Tunnel, a ground-breaking infrastructure project beneath the Yellow River in Jinan, China, showcases the pinnacle of modern tunneling technology. Spanning 3.6 miles (5,755 meters), this underwater passage is the world’s largest-diameter shield tunnel, with a diameter of 17.5 meters. The project was executed using the Shanhe Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a state-of-the-art Mixshield TBM designed to handle extreme geological conditions, including high groundwater pressure and heterogeneous soil compositions. The Shanhe tunnel boring machine machine achieved remarkable efficiency, completing the underwater shielding segment in just 110 days a world record for 17-meter-class shield construction.
The tunnel features a double-decker configuration with six lanes of traffic, enhancing connectivity between Jinan’s urban center and the northern regions across the Yellow River. This strategic infrastructure aims to alleviate traffic bottlenecks, support regional development, and contribute to the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. The Shanhe TBM’s innovative design includes advanced slurry technology, automatic air cushion pressure management, and a telescopic camera system for precise monitoring, ensuring safety and stability during excavation.
